Retinol
The gold-standard over-the-counter retinoid. Retinol is converted in skin to retinoic acid, regulating cell turnover and stimulating collagen synthesis. Two decades of clinical evidence underpin its anti-aging credentials.
Enzymatically oxidised to retinaldehyde then to all-trans retinoic acid, which binds nuclear retinoic-acid receptors (RAR/RXR). This upregulates collagen I/III and downregulates matrix metalloproteinases, normalising keratinisation in the pilosebaceous unit.
