Retinyl Palmitate
An ester of retinol and palmitic acid. Three conversion steps from retinoic acid, making it the gentlest, and weakest, retinoid. Often found in moisturisers labelled 'with vitamin A'.
Skin esterases cleave the palmitate, releasing retinol which then converts through retinal to retinoic acid. Each conversion step loses efficacy, so net potency is roughly 20× lower than retinol.
